Malo, the popular Latin band from the 70's, will be playing their hits including Suavecita, Cafe and Nena. The concert will be a reunion of the original members Arcello Garcia, vocalist, and Jorge Santana on lead guitar. Arcello and Jorge grew up and started playing in the Mission District. They have put together this reunion concert to benefit the students at Buena Vista School and the Roberto Clemente Baseball League. Joining them at Space 550 in San Francisco will be Latin jazz giant Pete Escovedo, members of War, and the San Jose Latin rock group Mystique. Latin hip-hop band Storm is coming from Denver for their first San Francisco appearance. This family band, consisting of a 14 year old singer and her six brothers, has just released their second album.Jesse "Chuy" Varela from KCSM-FM will be the Master of Ceremonies. Invited guests include Mayor Willie Brown, Board of Supervisors' President Tom Ammiano, Board of Education President, Mary Hernandez, Orlando Cepeda, and jazz great Armando Peraza. Mayor Brown has named February 27 "MALO DAY" for the City of San Francisco in honor of the event. The San Francisco Giants have made a generous donation of Giants memorabilia which will be raffled the night of the concert. Internet giant, Inktomi, is sponsoring the event along with the Ultimate Cookie. Veronica Chavez, Teacher Leader at Buena Vista Alternative School, and Roberto Lopez, President of the Roberto Clemente Baseball League, will make opening remarks.
Buena Vista School is a public alternative school in the Mission which offers Spanish Immersion Education. Funds from the concert will help to send the 5th grade class to visit schools in Mazatlan and Recodo, Mexico. The Roberto Clemente Baseball League is known as the "Latin Little League" They will use the funds to buy equipment and uniforms.
